HIGH THROUGHPUT
mechanical abrasion testing (case 13)
QUESTION:
How to improve mechanical abrasion testing?
Abrasion resistance of printing plates is tested by a Taber test (DIN 53778, ASTM D2486, ASTM D4213, ASTM 3450, ISO DIN 11998). However, the limited throughput of this type of abrasion test formed a bottleneck in the development process. The number of plates undergoing abrasion tests had to be increased and more flexibility in test conditions was required to better simulate conditions on press.
APPROACH:
Individually controllable Taber test devices
After having discussed the performance requirements, the AgfaLabs HTT group designed an abrasion test system with 6 individually controllable (rpm, pressure, frequency, time) Taber test devices, which also work with partial immersion (ink). Design, drawings, mechanical assembly, electronics and software development were all done by the HTT department.
RESULT:
Faster, automated testing
Automated testing is now carried out 6 times faster, thanks to the ability to compare 6 different abrasion environments (dry, wet, rpm, pressure, time, and contact-material) on 1 substrate. This results in better and faster prediction of the run-length of the printing plates on press.
