The discovery of X-rays - called 'X' because the discoverer Wilhelm Röntgen could not identify them - was a major breakthrough in healthcare diagnostics. The combination of X-rays and photosensitive material made it possible to look 'inside' the human body without surgery. Agfa was the first company to introduce X-ray films to the market.

Over the years, Agfa has constantly expanded its know-how with the objective of developing integrated solutions: it has moved healthcare imaging far beyond 'making an image' by including the latest digital technologies. Digital images are available immediately after the examination of a patient. They can be viewed and manipulated on computer screens and sent via internal networks and the Internet.

Today, Agfa supplies both analogue and digital imaging solutions and an innovative range of diagnosis and communications systems, including computed radiography and digital networks for hospitals. Agfa's equipment, consumables and services are targeted to different departments and include comprehensive information systems tailored to the needs of each hospital.

Together with medical and hospital IT specialists, Agfa makes healthcare diagnoses more reliable and affordable. All this has resulted in a significant accomplishment: more than 50% of all hospitals in the world now use Agfa technology.
