HIGH THROUGHPUT

abrasion test samples analysis (case 12)

QUESTION:

How to speed up abrasion test analysis?

Using an abrasion test device that’s 6 times faster (see also ‘High throughput mechanical abrasion testing’) created the need for a faster and observer-independent analysis of the abrasion test results of printing plates.

APPROACH:

Automated abrasion resistance analysis

After wear testing, the relative thickness of a remaining coating is a measure of its abrasion resistance. Local coating thickness is assessed by its optical density in comparison to non-treated areas of coating and substrate.

After completion of the abrasion test, the plate is scanned with a calibrated flatbed scanner. An automated image analysis was developed in LabVIEW/IMAQ.

RESULT:

Instant wear testing reports

After completion of the abrasion test cycles and scanning of the samples, the abrasion test results are immediately available to the user. Results are objective (independent from subjective scoring of an individual observer) and automatically reported.

In case of doubts, the software allows re-inspection of individual samples. Different analysis algorithms can be chosen according to the predominant structure of the abrasive pattern.
